AI Overviews
Google Search AI answers that summarise the web at the top of the results page, often before any blue link.
What are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are the AI-generated answers Google places at the top of Search, summarising the web and citing a handful of sources before the classic blue links.
AI Overviews moved the most valuable spot on the results page from a ranked list to a synthesised answer — and that answer cites only a few brands.
When a query triggers an AI Overview, Google composes a short answer from several pages and links out to the sources it drew on. The user often gets what they need from the overview itself, so the question becomes not where you rank but whether you are one of the cited sources.
This is why AEO and GEO matter on Google as much as on conversational engines. Being citable — answer-first structure, clear definitions, structured data, recognised entity — decides whether your page is one of the handful folded into the overview rather than buried beneath it.
AI Overviews are also a driver of zero-click search: the answer resolves on the page itself. For a brand, the win is no longer the click but the citation inside the overview, which is exactly what SkuLift measures as share of voice.
