FMP (First Mention Position)
A complementary L3 quality metric — where the brand is first mentioned, as a fraction.
What is First Mention Position?
First Mention Position (FMP) is the first brand mention as a fraction of the response [0,1] — 0 is the very start, lower is better — not an absolute index. Null when the brand is absent, excluded from the mean.
FMP captures how early a reader meets your brand inside an answer, normalised so answers of any length compare fairly.
FMP locates the first time the brand is mentioned and expresses that position as a fraction of the whole response: 0 means the brand opens the answer, 1 means it appears at the very end. Lower is better, because a brand named in the opening line is far more likely to be remembered and re-cited than one buried in the final sentence.
Expressing position as a fraction [0,1] rather than an absolute word or character index is deliberate: it makes FMP comparable across short and long answers. A mention at word 20 means something very different in a 30-word reply than in a 600-word one; the fraction normalises that.
FMP is null when the brand is absent and is excluded from the mean, so it never pretends an unmentioned brand was "mentioned late". It sits at L3 Quality alongside PWC, CAS and sentiment, adding a pure earliness signal that PWC blends with volume.
